About the Region

Cairns is the bustling hub of Tropical North Queensland and the gateway to the iconic Great Barrier Reef and world heritage listed Wet Tropics rainforest.

Once considered a small port town, Cairns is now a modern city that reflects its rich and diverse multicultural population whilst still retaining its ‘small town’ feeling.   It is a city that offers a year-round outdoor lifestyle – with the central business district easily explored by foot.  Within an hour, you can be snorkelling the spectacular underwater playground of the Great Barrier Reef.  Venture inland and you will find an abundance of rich greenery that surrounds Cairns - explore the iconic Daintree and Cape Tribulation, discover the magical beauty of Crystal Cascades and Fairy Falls or raft the powerful Barron River.

Cairns is a city of unrivalled natural beauty, a place where amazing restaurants are waiting to be dined in, where you can explore a 180-million-year-old rainforest and discover a rich culture through the local Indigenous people that have lived on the land for over 40,000 years.

The ecological wonderland that is the Daintree Rainforest will take your breath away.  One of the most complex eco-systems in the world, and older than the Amazon Rainforest - by tens of millions of years - a visit to the Daintree will take you on an immersive journey through nature’s rich history and its natural beauty will stay with you forever.  Indulge on a leisurely journey down the Mossman River on a inflatable raft or embark in a thrilling adventure of spotting crocodiles during a guided tour.

  • Atherton Tablelands

The Atherton Tablelands can be discovered south-west of Cairns, rising more than 700m above sea level.  Not only will you discover a lush region of rainforest and wetlands, it is also renowned as a food bowl.  Discover an abundance of farms growing tropical fruits, bananas and berries whilst also being one of Australia’s two major coffee-growing regions. Whilst in the region, a favourite place of ours is Gallo – a family friendly, working dairy farm that is also making a selection of cheeses in the traditional European style and their chocolatiers are creating the most delicious chocolates that can be enjoyed in their café and also purchased to take with you.

  • Kuranda Rainforest Village

The Kuranda Rainforest Village is found in the mountains just 27km from Cairns. This cool-climate village offers an escape from the coastal heat and is home to a thriving arts and crafts community with outdoor markets.  You will also discover Queensland’s most famous waterfall lookout whilst here – Barron Falls.

  • Port Douglas

Port Douglas is a tropical paradise where Four Mile Beach offers a largely undeveloped beach oasis – where you can swim in the warm waters or simply stop and take in the spectacular view. Some of Queensland’s best golf courses can be found here and the Sunday market is where you will discover the region’s best food producers and artisans selling their wares.Description goes here
